The buy and hold investor is or should be a thing of the past, in my opinion. This is the strategy that is pretty much used by the big mutual funds and was a very successful strategy during the boom years of the USA economy from after the end of the 2nd world war until about 2000. Buy and hold investors buy and hold for maybe 10, 15 or even 20 years.

Unfortunatley the mutual fund companies still want you to think that this is a great strategy, well it might be for them!, they use statistics based on averages over 40 years of fund performance and still manage to convince people to let them manage their money.

The reason they like this strategy is that they make money off fee’s etc even if your account drops 30%, like it did for many during 2008, they even think that a return of 5-10% a years is good!, in reality it’s little more than what you can get in CD’s

Unfortunatley this is now 2009 and world ecomonics have changed, the world is now a much flatter playing field and the USA no longer has world trade dominace like it enjoyed after the WWII ended.  There is also the USA national debt, the internet, a global ring of very high speed optical fiber internet connections and the wide spread use of cheap PC’s.

In short the buy hold strategy is dead becuase there is no good reason to believe that the USA stock market will continue to keep on growing given the new world order.
